ABSTRACT

Aims The study aimed to examine the nature and outcomes of social support for the well-being and quality of life (QoL) of adults with epilepsy. Methods The Australian Epilepsy Longitudinal Survey's 5 th Wave included the Medical Outcomes Study Modified Social Support Survey on four dimensions of social support and the QOLIE-31. Both numerical data and open-ended responses were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. A mixed method was used where quantitative analysis used t -tests, analysis of variance and block recursive regression, and qualitative analysis identified themes. Results Three-hundred thirty-two people with epilepsy (PWE) participated. The quantitative component showed that for emotional/informational support being older and living alone were key factors. These as well as household income were important in tangible support. For affectionate support living alone and household income were factors, but only income was a factor for positive social interaction. In addition, only positive social interaction predicted increased QoL. In the qualitative component of the study both positive and negative supports were identified for the emotional/informational supports. Many reported the benefits of having information, although some reported failure to have their needs taken seriously by health professionals or epilepsy associations. Inability to drive was an important feature of negative tangible support as was finding some assistive services unaffordable. Reports of positive social interaction identified being accepted as a person with epilepsy that is the primary concern. Peer support plays a role here. Discussion The findings of factors affecting the four dimensions of support in this study have supported a number of studies. This includes the effects of positive social interaction on QoL. The qualitative analysis supports these results, but it also contributes to deeper understanding of support in the lives of PWE. Conclusion Social support is a particularly important issue for PWE. The results of this study demonstrate the complexities and benefits of obtaining the appropriate forms of support. This survey took place before the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic and it may well be that this phenomenon affects PWE's support needs. Copyright © 2023. Indian Epilepsy Society. ABSTRACT

Our charity's mission is dedicated to beating blood cancer by funding research and supporting those affected. Since 1960, we have invested over 500 million in blood cancer research, transforming treatments and saving lives. Since 2015 there has been a Support Services team within the charity. This service was established to provide information that the blood cancer community can trust, in a language they can understand. By connecting and listening to our community they deepen our understanding and help shape our work. Research suggests that blood cancer patients are more likely than any other patients to leave their diagnosis appointment feeling they do not fully understand their condition. Our service can often consolidate the information given by clinicians. Patients also need advice and support on how to adapt to day-to- day life after their diagnosis. There are challenges that are unique to blood cancer, such as living with cancer as a chronic condition, being on 'watch and wait' or fluctuating remissions and relapses. In 2023 the Support Services team have a 7 day presence on our phone line, email and social media platform where people can communicate with one of our trained blood cancer support officers, or one of three Registered Nurses, all who can provide information about blood cancer diagnosis and help with emotional and practical support. We also run an online community forum where people affected by blood cancer can connect, share experiences and provide peer support. The highly experienced haematology nurses provide a clinical aspect to the support of the Blood Cancer Community that enhances the established patient centred support given historically by the charity. The nurses advanced knowledge and experience of haematological cancers, treatments, side effects, holistic care and NHS process can further guide the community. This is in addition to the invaluable information from their treatment teams. In 2023 the Support Services team are now reaching thousands of the blood cancer community. We understand that in the past 3 years the COVID-19 pandemic and the work of our charity around this will have influenced the significant increase in contacts but equally the robust and trusted services provided through this charity has contributed too.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: This study aims to introduce a research framework that identifies the potential sources of design self-efficacy that emerge from the digital class by covering the teaching for professional competence model (TPCM) to enhance students' design self-efficacy. Design/methodology/approach: The multistage and purposive sampling technique is used, and the respondents considered are Malaysian university students. Further, the students who completed the survey included both local and international students so as to capture responses through primary data. Findings The findings of this research study reveal that design self-efficacy is determined not only by feedback and collaborative learning but also by perceived digital class experience. Research limitations/implications: Moreover, this study is limited in offering a theoretical framework using the TPCM;therefore, future studies may incorporate Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory and may also use the theory integration approach. Also, in terms of geographic coverage, the current work is limited to an area in Klang Valley. Future studies may be carried out in other parts or regions of the country. Future researchers may also focus on technological self-efficacy to capture the other related factors that may be related. Practical implications: This study not only contributed to the theoretical extensions but also to practical implications, which would benefit the policymakers of higher education providers in Malaysia. Originality/value: TPCM components, which are students' personal characteristics, teaching practices and student's perceptions of the classroom climate, are mapped into the digital class context as potential sources of design self-efficacy and collectively labelled as digital class experience. To the authors' knowledge, the digital class environment variable is yet to be tested as a component of TPCM.

ABSTRACT

This paper explores differences in 437 learners' "foreign language classroom anxiety" (FLCA) in in-person and online English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classes before the outbreak of the pandemic and during the first lockdown in spring 2020. Statistical analyses of data gathered with a web survey revealed a slight, yet significant drop in learners' overall FLCA in "emergency remote teaching." In order to obtain a more granular view, item-level analyses revealed that learners in online classes were significantly less worried about being outperformed by peers, suffered less from physical symptoms of anxiety when called on in class, and were less anxious when they were in fact well-prepared. Feeling embarrassed to volunteer answers was significantly higher in online classes. Interviews with 21 participants revealed that the interviewees mentioned anxiety-provoking aspects of the class considerably more frequently online than in in-person classes. However, the sources of anxiety in online classes differed from the ones in classes taught on-site. Thus, it seems that the newness of the setting foregrounded anxiety-provoking aspects specific to emergency remote teaching, making others fade into the background at the beginning of the pandemic.

ABSTRACT

There is a need for synchronous and inclusive online peer tutoring in large, undergraduate classes. As a lack of data or internet connectivity may limit online peer tutoring, the use of a data-free instant messenger was implemented for online tutoring in a class of 342 students. The Moya application allows students to chat and send voice notes to tutors and peers without using data. Sending attachments incurs data costs but the amount of data is displayed prior to downloading. The qualitative interpretivist case study used data collected from purposive sampling via an online survey. Consent was received from 252 third-year Information Systems students at a historically disadvantaged university. Qualitative data were analysed via thematic content analysis using the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology 2 model as a theoretical basis. Findings indicate that the majority of students (85.7%) did not use the data-free Moya instant messenger. Reasons for the low usage included a negative performance expectancy, as students did not see the benefit in using the application to engage with peers or tutors. Perceived effort expectancy was low, as students did not desire to learn to use a new application. Results showed that using WhatsApp was a habit. Moreover, social influence was a factor, as fellow students and tutors were also using WhatsApp. Students recommended increasing awareness of the Moya application and providing training. The price value was expected to be a significant factor as this application does not require data, but this was not the case. Facilitating conditions show that students had data for WhatsApp. Moya has the same interface design as the preferred WhatsApp so learning to use the application should require minimal effort. The unexpected findings indicate that students prefer WhatsApp, an instant messenger that requires data, over a datafree instant messenger. The findings leave lecturers questioning whether using WhatsApp for online peer tutoring is the more viable option.

ABSTRACT

OnTrackNY is a nationally recognized Coordinated Specialty Care model disseminated across New York state for young people experiencing early non-affective psychosis. OnTrackNY is a network of 22 teams located in licensed outpatient clinics, serving over 2500 individuals. OnTrackNY offers medication management, case management, individual and group cognitive behaviourally oriented therapy, family support and psychoeducation, supported employment and education, and peer support services. Teams receive training for implementation through an intermediary organization called OnTrack Central. OnTrackNY was selected as a regional hub of the National Institute of Mental Health Early Psychosis Intervention Network (EPINET), a national learning healthcare system (LHS) for young adults with early psychosis. This symposium will present the different ways in which EPINET OnTrackNY implemented systematic communitybased participatory processes to ensure robust stakeholder involvement to improve the quality of OnTrackNY care. Florence will present results of an assessment of stakeholder feedback experiences used to develop strategies for assertive outreach and engagement of program participants, families and providers. Bello will present on mechanisms for integrating of co-creation principles to design, develop and execute quality improvement projects in EPINET OnTrackNY. Stefancic will present on quality improvement projects that used rapid cycle qualitative methods, tools, and strategies to build team capacity and flexibility to respond to an LHS. Montague will present adaptations to OnTrackNY services during the COVID-19 pandemic using an implementation science framework. Finally, Patel will lead a discussion on the implications of involving individuals with lived experiences in all phases of the process to maximize learning in an LHS.

ABSTRACT

The significance of review articles has been proved. This type of articles is especially necessary now, when immediate actions to save an important economic sector must be taken. The present research aims to determine the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on one of the most important elements of tourism – the accommodation facilities, through bibliometric analysis. In order to achieve this goal, the VOSviewer software was used, and data from one of the world's largest databases of scientific production – the Web of Science, was collected. The bibliographic coupling approach was used in the bibliometric analysis. The bibliometric analysis was followed by content analysis of the most cited studies from each cluster. The effects of COVID-19 on the accommodation facilities are summarized and classified by groups. © M. Nekova.

ABSTRACT

To regain overall well-being in the post-pandemic era, the priorities should not be only economic growth but also human physical and mental health. This study investigates how to incorporate the concept of well-being into the circular economy to facilitate the pursuit of individual/personal and social growth, and sustainable consumption. We begin with a systematic search of the literature on well-being and sustainable product–service systems, model the well-being components in peer-to-peer (P2P) sharing and reuse platforms, and propose design guidelines for platform development. According to our findings, (1) allocentric well-being components (such as gratitude, contribution, and altruism) serve as the antecedents of sharing behaviors, while egocentric components (such as pleasure and attachment) serve as the consequences, and (2) information sharing is crucial to initiating the flow of well-being perceptions and sustainable sharing and reuse behaviors. Based on the findings, we suggest a data-driven approach and active inference theory to facilitate related studies. This study sheds light on the potential to develop well-being within the circular economy and facilitate the sustainable working of the sharing and reuse ecosystem.

ABSTRACT

PurposePrior to 2020, University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Library's research services spanned multiple service points. Multiple locations were staffed by Library Student Research Assistants (LSRAs) and each location was supervised independently. While efforts to increase collaboration had been underway, much of the work and services remained siloed and often duplicated training and service hours.Design/methodology/approachWith the onset of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), UCLA Library rapidly transitioned from entirely in-person to entirely online services. With multiple service points pivoting, UCLA was redundant to have multiple online desks providing Zoom appointments and that quickly became apparent. Moreover, transitioning in-person student work to remote work was paramount to providing both normal services to users and allowing LSRAs to keep jobs during a time of uncertainty and insecurity.FindingsWhile the authors' original consolidation of services and implementation of shared supervision was a result of the pandemic and primarily involved online services, the authors have maintained this shared approach and collaborative vision in returning to in-person services. For the past year, the authors have offered shared in-person (at two library locations) and online services. As subject-specific library locations begin to reopen their desks, the authors continue to identify ways to leverage shared supervision and a robust referral model for those on-site services while negotiating student staffing and the need for both general and subject-specific services.Originality/valueThe authors present a novel approach to peer-to-peer teaching and learning and research services and shared student worker supervision with services coordinated across multiple locations and disciplines within a large academic library serving a large student population.

A comprehensive graduate teaching assistant (GTA) training program in mathematical sciences designed at one institution is being adapted and replicated at two peer institutions. Using a case study approach, this paper outlines the development of the program components, which include a first-year teaching seminar, peer mentoring and support from a peer TA Coach, a Critical Issues in STEM Education seminar, and K–12 outreach to inform understanding of the pipeline. Additionally, adaptations due to institutional context and the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic are described. Implications for components of the comprehensive program, based on GTA-provided feedback, are discussed. ABSTRACT

Although statistical literacy has become a key competence in today's data-driven society, it is usually not a part of statistics education. To address this issue, we propose an innovative concept for a conference-like seminar on the topic of statistical literacy. This seminar draws attention to the relevance and importance of statistical literacy, and moreover, students are made aware of the process of science communication and are introduced to the peer review process for the assessment of scientific papers. In the summer term 2020, the seminar was conducted as a joint project by the University of Hamburg, the University of Muenster, and the Joachim Herz Foundation. In this article, we present the concept of the seminar and our experience with this concept in the summer term 2020.

ABSTRACT

Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT) is a national programme of improvement to identify and reduce unwarranted variation and non-evidence-based practice in healthcare. It aims to improve patient care, increase productivity and reduce costs. Professor Tim Briggs, an orthopaedic surgeon, began the programme with a pilot review visiting every orthopaedic surgery department in England. He used publicly available data to illuminate variation, and worked with the clinicians and management to develop improvements. The impressive initial report in 2015 led to NHS Improvement investing £60m to expand the programme to 40 medical and surgical specialties. The follow-up Orthopaedic report detailed savings of £696m to the NHS. GIRFT is now sharing its data with the CQC and leading the charge with elective recovery following COVID-19. GIRFT differs from previous programmes of improvement through its peer led, supportive approach to promoting change with early engagement of both clinicians and management. Common themes run through the almost 40 specialty reports published to date: variation in procurement and litigation costs, huge variations in patient treatment options (often with a lack of evidence base) and poor data quality. Successfully applied in orthopaedic surgery, it has been taken on enthusiastically by other specialties. Whether it can deliver its objective of £1.4bn savings whilst improving patient outcomes is yet to be seen, but its approach is changing the culture of the NHS.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: The authors seek to demonstrate, from a Hispanic-serving institution (HSI) perspective, the importance of utilizing High Impact Practices (HIPs) for not only more meaningful student employment initiatives, but to benefit the campus community and prepare Hispanic students for success post-graduation. Design/methodology/approach: Evaluation of current practices in academic libraries aided the design of the new staffing model, location and name. A survey of research desk student assistants was designed and implemented approximately one academic year after changes were executed. Survey data combined with follow-up interviews summarized the qualitative-focused assessment of the research desk's evolution and verified the validity of maintaining HIPs in libraries for Hispanic student success. Findings: The transition of the reference desk to a student-staffed research desk was successful in that librarians were able to dedicate more time to other endeavors, such as campus outreach and collection development. The High Impact Practice (HIP)-focused desk model, along with new, customized onboarding and training materials, fulfilled their goals of giving student assistants meaningful employment on campus while also bridging the gap between the library and the mostly Hispanic, first-generation student population. An assessment from the student assistants' point of view helped them further analyze the new research desk model. They found that student assistants noticed the ease with which their peers approached the desk and how their skills learned on the research desk transferred to their classes and future careers. Research limitations/implications: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the restructuring of library personnel the authors were unable to implement library patron surveys to evaluate the new desk model. Originality/value: Many academic libraries and partners have made the transition to student-staffed help desks or offer peer-to-peer tutoring or mentoring services. HIPs positively impact marginalized student populations scholastically, but no current studies discuss the effect on the Hispanic student population from an HSI perspective. This study illuminates the wholistic influence HIPs have on Hispanic student assistants, not only their work and peers, but the affect on their academic and personal lives. © 2023, Emerald Publishing Limited.

Objectives: The nursing care is more complex in relation to new technologies, new diseases, new globally emergencies. In relation to technology, nurses acquired more competences in relation to advanced therapy, in respiratory, circulatory, and renal support. The nursing workload increases in complexity and in responsibilities, without a staff increasing in relation to nursing activities. ECMO was widely applied to manage acute respiratory distress syndrome and circulatory failure, in case of cardiac arrest or cardiogenic shock, configuring as a therapy bridge to decision, to restore, to transplant or to nowhere. During the last years, nurses were involved to a rapid and continuous changing, to respond adequately to new health challenges, understanding or not their role and responsibilities in globally health care system. Nurse manages different variables, well represented by nursing activities score, but in nursing ECMO care, these variables are more complicated, in relation to ECMO device and to ECMO patient. What is the globally perception of nurses involved in ECMO care? Methods: A literature review was applied on PubMed. The inclusion criteria were all articles about ECMO, including pediatric and/or adult population, with a publication less than ten years. Result(s): A total of sixteen articles were found, with reduction to ten for relevance. The excluded articles talked about non ECMO care or patient;s perceptions. Articles included in the research talk about nursing perceptions (40%), education (30%), ethics in ECMO care (20%), professional experience in ECMO Covid (10%). Conclusion(s): The nursing perception on ECMO nursing care are different. They recognize the central role in ECMO care, but over workload, without staff increasing, less peer support, a low teamwork and personal differences in technical and non-technical skills increase some barriers to nursing perception of themselves. Nurses allocate their competence on experience and continuous training, but also a good teamwork and a professional recognition by other health care professions or by nursing supervisors can increase nursing perception and reduce the abandonment of nursing profession.

ABSTRACT

The inspiration for this collective writing project began with a digital conference entitled ‘Knowledge Socialism, COVID-19 and the New Reality of Education' held at Beijing Normal University. In this conference and through this article, multiple researchers spread across six continents have engaged in the collaborative task of outlining emerging innovations and alternative contingencies towards education, international collaboration, and digital reform in this time of global crisis. Trends associated with digital education, knowledge openness, peer production, and collective intelligence as articulated by Michael A. Peters' conception of Knowledge Socialism are given careful analysis and exploration. Some of the members of this collective endeavor to identify problems, others, begin to draw boxes around potential solutions. Overall, this article engages with real world challenges and innovations that look beyond dominant neoliberal trends in the knowledge economy to build bridges toward novel possibilities in this era of rapid digital change.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: To investigate radiation therapists' perceptions of participating in peer group supervision (PGS) and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on PGS. Method(s): Radiation therapists were introduced to PGS at an in-service facilitated by an employee assistance program representative. Nine volunteers were then placed into one of two PGS groups of similar experience levels. Groups met monthly for PGS sessions;and after six and 12 meetings each participant was sent a link to the 14-item Clinical Supervision Evaluation Questionnaire (CSEQ),1 three open-ended and three demographic questions. The study used both quantitative and qualitative methods. Result(s): Survey completion rates were 8/9 (88.9%) pre- and 6/7 (85.7%) post-COVID-19. Analysis of the CSEQ revealed that pre-COVID-19 seven participants (87.5%) and post-COVID-19 five participants (71.4%) had a positive experience with PGS. One (12.5%) and two (28.6%) participants pre- and post-COVID-19, respectively, stated that their experience was neither positive nor negative. The thematic data showed that the participants perceived PGS to assist with (i) feeling supported at work, (ii) developing an element of trust between group members, (iii) encouraging self-reflection, (iv) fostering an awareness of others, and (v) increasing problem-solving skills. Restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic led to fewer regular meetings, which had a negative impact on participants. Conclusion(s): Involvement in PGS within a radiation therapist setting has reportedly positively affected those involved. Regular access to a supportive, trusting team has enabled the participants to self-reflect and better troubleshoot work-related experiences.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in shifts in college education and subsequently peer sexuality education for college students. We examine one case study of a peer sexuality education group's challenges and benefits of navigating from in-person to online sexuality education work. We include reflexive journal entries from past and current members (n = 5), a survey from past and current members (n = 4), and organizational artifacts. We find challenges from both the peer education work itself and within the organization as well as benefits of accessibility and addressing marginalized topics in online spaces. ABSTRACT

Introduction: The introduction of dexamethasone in the treatment of COVID-19 began in late 2020 after evidence emerged demonstrating that treatment with corticosteroids reduced mortality in those infected with severe COVID-19.1 Current guidelines suggest the use of Dexamethasone 6mg OD for 7-10 days for those requiring oxygen. A small proportion of patients in the intensive care unit do not respond to the usual dosing of dexamethasone. A treatment often advocated following discussion with the regional ECMO centre was high-dose steroid therapy.2-3 No guidance existed regarding the use of high-dose steroids in ARDS secondary to COVID-19. We believed there was inconsistency in patient selection, screening, dosing and monitoring. A protocol was needed to simplify this process. Objective(s): To develop a simple protocol for the use of high-dose steroids in COVID-19 related ARDS that provided the user with information on: 1. When to consider high-dose steroids 2. The precautions that should be taken to exclude infection prior to commencing high-dose steroids 3. The monitoring required while receiving high-dose steroids 4. A proposed treatment regimen Methodology and Results: A literature review of treatment regimens for high-dose steroids in COVID-19 ARDS was undertaken. We also included trials involving non-COVID-19 ARDS.3-4 A local evidence-based protocol for the use of high-dose steroids in COVID-19 related ARDS was designed. Following peer review by the wider MDT the protocol was first trialled, reviewed, and then adopted. An extended guideline with scientific context together with a quick reference bedside poster were launched. Conclusion(s): The protocol provided a user-friendly summary of the information required to safely use high-dose steroids for the treatment of COVID-19 related ARDS. The algorithm has now been adopted in several units and has been submitted for consideration as a network wide resource. Feedback from users has been positive and we will seek to review and update this guidance as further evidence emerges in this evolving condition.

ABSTRACT

Mental health needs and disparities are widespread and have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, with the greatest burden being on marginalized individuals worldwide. The World Health Organization developed the Mental Health Gap Action Programme to address growing global mental health needs by promoting task sharing in the delivery of psychosocial and psychological interventions. However, little is known about the training needed for non-specialists to deliver these interventions with high levels of competence and fidelity. This article provides a brief conceptual overview of the evidence concerning the training of non-specialists carrying out task-sharing psychosocial and psychological interventions while utilizing illustrative case studies from Kenya, Ethiopia, and the United States to highlight findings from the literature. In this article, the authors discuss the importance of tailoring training to the skills and needs of the non-specialist providers and their roles in the delivery of an intervention. This narrative review with four case studies advocates for training that recognizes the expertise that non-specialist providers bring to intervention delivery, including how they promote culturally responsive care within their communities.Copyright © 2023 The Author(s).
